My mom was also on the Weight Watcher's point system for a while. At first it worked, when she was really being strict about it, but after a while, things kind of trailed off, and she ended up gaining back pretty much all of the weight that she had lost (though it was not a significant change anyways...). I think that the diet leaves you too much choice - you can blow a whole day's worth of points eating crap, and then what are you supposed to do for the rest of the day? Eat nothing? That's REALLY good for your metabolism and mental state! NOT!!!
Earlier this year, my mom decided to try the carbohydrate addict's diet, and she has had EXCELLENT results. She has lost 16 pounds, feels great. She no longer craves the carbs that she swore she couldn't live without, and makes much much better food choices - instead of snacking on a box of crackers, she might have tofu, or instead of a huge bowl of cereal in the morning, an egg white omlette. And now she understands my eating habits a lot better!!! smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
John, ask your mom to read the carbohydrate addict's book (you can find it ANYWHERE), and perhaps that would be right for her! Hope I've helped...

John you and I are in the same boat there. I have tried for years to get my older brother to listen to me. I have come to the conclusion that all we can do as trainers is to offer sound scientific advice, its really unfortunate especially when those that are closest to us don't listen. Sometimes it goes beyond frusterating smilies/blueupset.gif I have lost allot of sleep over that one. Thats why I wrote that article to vent. But I hear you bro smilies/images/icons/wink.gif Hopefully if you continue to explain to her the importance of sound nutrition she will allow you to put her on a program. Let me know how it goes.
