Hey!
I have heard alot about people drinking shakes as one of there meals. I'm trying to gain muscle mass. Could someone explain the significance of these shakes, and perhaps give me the ingrediants for a good protein shake or something that would be good for someone who is trying to gain muscle mass?

ok here ya go
when u build mussel first u have to rip it appart and u do that by lifting weights and running.
with protein shakes ur restoring protein that was riped apart wich makes ur mussel recovery faster(wich means ur mussels build better) also its a meal replacment for diets so ur getting the protein u need to build those mussels more protein the better.
so basicly protein is essential for mussel growth. protein is need to release amino acids also wich help ur mussels grow
now for a bulking shake
Vanilla Bulking Shake
250ml Vanilla Soya Milk
250ml Milk
125ml Cranberry Juice
2 Tbs Heavy Cream
2 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream
200g Frozen Fat Free Vanilla Yogurt
75g Whey (Vanilla of COURSE)
1/2 tbs Flax Seed Oil
Optional:
50g Sugar (after workout SPIKE )
Blend all ingridents together and drink out of Blender cup to save washing up
Nutritional Stats (roughly)
Calories 800 (1000 with Sugar)
Protien 100
Carbs 60 (110 with Sugar)
Fat 22

i forgot one thing its recomended u have 1 or1.5 grams of protein per body pound
ex a man weights 200 pounds he needs 200grams of protein
i suggest 1 gram per bpdy pound

I do not mean anything personal Steve, but let me clear a few things up:

I agree with the lifting, but not a great source of muscle building with running.

Your muscles not only build better, but they don't build period without enough protein. And it is spelled muscles, not mussels (I think that is some sort of oyster!) We all make mistakes though.

Protein is amino acids essentially, it is broken down into strands of amino acids when digested.
"Protein 100"
The body only absorbs 60 grams of protein at a time (unless your system has seriously adapted to extreme protein intake, which takes years.) So you could cut down some of the protein intake and save it for another meal, no worry though, you will just iscrete the waste.

I would suggest 1.5 to 2 grams per pound of bodyweight. You got the point though.
Not trying to be a pest, just wanted to point some things out to you man. This could only make you smarter, and get you ready for the gym.

ok i do agree that running isnt as effective as lifting weights but ur still useing protein for ur musceles because they r getting ripped apart and it needs to be replaced
all body builders i talk to suggest 1-1.5 nothing above 1.5 a good base would be 1-1.5 or on a cut...but for bulking and people who have been lifting linger or have more BW then increased levels are ok
not to be mean just what i have been told by alot of people
also protein is needed in ur system befor other amino acids can be released. yes protein is an amino acid that is broken down into strands of other amino acids but u also have to have it to release amino acids that are not released by the protein.
by the way have u ever heard of ribose
